The Frosted Windows of St. Petersburg

Reading a poem in Russian by Osip Mandelstam, Olga compares winters in St. Petersburg, the ‘grand city’ in Russia from where she immigrated to Boston more than 25 years ago.

Olga says she has not seen windows patterned with “diamond cut” icicles in Boston. Interpreting the poem, she explains that the poet is describing the feeling of sitting in a room…snow falling…the windows frosted over with icicles. Listen in on Olga describing the splash of color at the end of the poem that conjures memories of summer days.
